Coastal Protection of Tranquebar.

With great power the Tsunami hit Tranquebar on December 26th, 2004. This resulted a subscription which intended to help the citizens of Tranquebar to re-establish their normal daily life.
A countless number of NGO's gave help. Therefore the Tranquebar Association made an agreement which told that a coastal protection was the best for the future. Local people had tried to establish this for years.
An application was sent to the authorities and on August 30th 2005 a permission was given by the District Collector in  Nagapattinam.
The permission is not only for coastal protection with granite stones but also for protection with plants. This project will be made by the Bestseller Foundation.
For the project is made a report which mostly is written by a Danish-Sri Lankan expert.
 
Local builders began in January 2006 to fill up the area between Gold Smith Street and the temple with used bricks and other indestructible materials from old buildings. A border with these materials was made and on this the granite stones were placed. When the work has finished this part of the Tranquebar-area will be protected from the heavy waves of the Bengal.
The work with granite stones is first part of the project and it started late in February 2006.

Den 20. april 2007 startede så Public Works Department med det offentlige kystsikringsprojekt.

Vi har ikke de mange oplysninger, men nedenstående billeder fortæller en hel del om arbejdet.

De første billeder fra det offentlige kystsikringsarbejde er netop hjemkommet fra Trankebar og vi skynder os at viderebringe nogle af dem.
