The General Governor in Tranquebar 1786-1808.
Peter Anker 1744 - 1832

The Swedish born Norwegian Peter Anker  was general governor for the Danish-Norwegian colony Tranquebar at the Coromandel Coast in India. At that time about 25000 Indians and about 100 Europeans lived in the small town.
He was a competent amateur painter,
who was interested in botany, architecture, archaeology and street life and during his stay in India he drew and painted - as the first Norwegian - the impressions from the exotic India on paper and canvas.
The Ethnographic Museum in Norway has had an exhibition about his works.
